The Tapawera & Districts Community Council (TDCC) aims to give a voice to the residents of the Tapawera district and promote the improvement of our community. We promote the interests of Tapawera and surrounding areas for the betterment of residents, local enterprises and community services.
To become a member of the TDCC please complete this online application. Membership to the TDCC is completely free and there’s no obligation to contribute in any way. Membership allows you to bring issues of concern to the TDCC committee and vote on important community decisions. Please note that this online form is an application to join the TDCC. The TDCC Committee must appraise each application according to clauses 2.3 and 2.4 of the constitution and you will be notified of the Committee’s decision on your membership.
The council acts as a communications channel between residents and community groups in the area and the Tasman District Council (TDC), along with other key stakeholders. The TDCC also represents the interests of the wider Tapawera community more generally, and has sought to improve it for many years. A copy of the TDCC constitution (including its full objects) can be found below. Since 2021 the council has been collaborating more closely with Tapawera Connect, working towards the community vision that the people of Tapawera and surrounding valleys belong to a caring and resilient community.
The council operates the Tapawera Community Op Shop in the community centre. The Op Shop is a valuable community service and allows the council to make grants for projects or activities that benefit the Tapawera community. For grant criteria and an application form see below.
The community council operates in two-year terms with the current one being 2023–25. Elections are normally held in August with nominations called for the month before. The TDCC meets monthly (except for January) on the third Tuesday of the month beginning at 7pm in the community centre (op shop). Members of the community are very welcome to attend. The TDCC welcomes input and questions about community issues at TapaweraTDCC@gmail.com. If your query or feedback relates to a particular area of the Tapawera district please indicate that and it will be shared with your area representative.
Join the Tapawera & Districts Community Council (TDCC) Committee
Following the recent Tasman District Council (TDC) elections, we have a suite of new councillors. We congratulate John Gully and welcome him to the Lakes and Murchison Ward, which includes Tapawera and the surrounding areas.
One of the best ways to connect with TDC and make sure that new councillors — including John — understand the issues and opportunities facing the Tapawera area is to join the TDCC Committee. TDCC meets monthly with our local councillor and carries real weight with Council as a community organisation.
We advocate for local improvements, like reducing the speed limit outside the school, urging TDC to fix potholes, the Dart River crossing, culverts, and more. We also work with TDC on ways to both save and make the best use of ratepayers’ money to support our community — for example, through the development of a new community hub.
TDCC gets things done.
TDCC owns and manages the Tapawera Community Centre on behalf of the community. The Centre provides space for local midwives, health services, and community groups. It also houses the Op Shop, and revenue from the Op Shop helps fund local initiatives — including recent Tapawera School sports events and the “Spring Show.”
We regularly donate funds to good causes, whether it’s the rescue helicopter or a new wood chipper for the Community Garden.
The Kahurangi Gateway, along with the coffee and food stalls in the village, also operate on TDCC land and access our water and power.
We’re also working with groups like Tapawera Connect and the Historical Society to help make the centre of the village safe, welcoming, and interesting for everyone.
If you’d like to support your community, consider becoming a member of TDCC and joining the committee. Under the new constitution, you need to be a member to either join the committee or nominate someone to it. The nomination process is described below.
Membership is free and open to anyone living in the area.
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS – ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Every two years, the TDCC holds a nomination process for committee members and officers. Like all incorporated societies across the country, TDCC has had to revise its constitution to bring it into line with the Incorporated Societies Act 2022, which came fully into force on 5 October 2023.
The terms of TDCC’s revised constitution were largely dictated by the conditions for incorporation under the new Act. To download the full constitution click here.
In accordance with Clause 6.3 of the TDCC Constitution, the Committee hereby gives notice calling for nominations for Officer positions on the TDCC Committee.
Nominations are invited from members of the Tapawera & Districts Community Council for Committee Members (up to 9 positions).
Each nomination must:
- Be made on the official Nomination Form (below).
